Sneak in to the "GO"

DATSUN GO - The new ray of hope for Nissan to win the hearts of Indians.  Had a chance to see the car in flesh at the Phoenix Market City – Velachery.  The display was part of the promo being done across malls in India to familiarize the brand and its baby to the Janta.  Did a quick sneak peek review of the car and here is my take:

  • Car on display was a higher trim.
  • Overall car looks good, exterior styling is neat.  Will give tough completion in the looks department to the vehicles it is pitched against – Alto 800/K10, Eon. 
  • Front grille with the Datsun badge is an eye catcher of sorts.
  • Paint job is decent
  •  Single Wipers with double arm do the duty
  •   Interior trim parts don’t look cheap for its segment.  Bit hard though.
  •   Instrument panel is pretty basic and primitive.  No audio on any variant.  Mobile holder and USB charging point provided.
  •   Steering wheel – just basic.  Handling can’t be judged now.
  •    No glove box – open slot for things – serious let down.
  •    Instrument cluster as the analog speedometer.  No provision of RPM display.  Displays the optimum gear choice for speeds.  Will help avoid lugging.  Digital display provided.  Should display KM churned and trip meter.
  •  Gear knob mounted on the center console attached to the IP frees up space on front seat.  Psuedo bench seats can accommodate a kid in the middle, though GO is claimed to be pure 5 seater, this makes it a 5.5 seater.
  •  Interior look spacious, but would be tight for 6 footers.  Head room is just OK kind, not a tall boy design. 
  •  Rear seats have just the basic cushioning, long drives – better to have additional reinforcements in place.
  • Glowing display of “GO” on the sil is a nice thing.
  •  Rear boot is a just too big for an entry level car.  GO will win this section hands down.  Parcel tray was absent.  Not sure whether it has been moved to the accessories list.
  • Front doors have power windows with central locking.  Rear doors have roll down mechanism in place.
  • ORVM’s don’t have a knob mechanism to adjust even on the higher end – a could have been there feature
  •  Panel gaps look bit uneven.  Being a built to cost car – no complaints.
  •   Doors close with a clink noise (metal to metal) rather than a thud. Weather strips...

-        Overall, a pretty nicely packaged car with big pluses on the looks, space (especially the boot) and power train front.  Being touted a sub 4 lac car sounds good.  Can be a winner and has all credentials to give the Suzuki guys a run for their money/ numbers.  All the best DATSUN – Go!
